Motivation for Recovery

Often we hear, "if the addict isn't ready to stop using, they won't", or ""you gotta wanna". This is not necessarily so for everyone struggling to overcome substance abuse.
Those ensnared in a downward spiral of addiction may not want to stop using, EVER. Many who battle addction DO want to stop the pain and negative consequences related to their illness.
Painful consequences of use can come from estrangement from family or friends. The desire to repair relationships and re-engage with family, children, or grandchildren, can be powerfully motivating.
Today, I will recognize that family and friends may have been hurt as a result of my behaviors while using. I will respect the limits and boundaries they have set, whether by words or deeds.
